Press Release
Elster, a global leader in smart metering and smart grid system solutions, today announced the extension of its alliance agreement with Enersource Hydro Mississauga, one of the largest distributors of electricity in Ontario, to complete the utility’s smart meter deployment.
Since 2006, Enersource has deployed more than 60,000 Elster smart meters and Elster’s EnergyAxis® System, and will add another 160,000 Elster smart meters to complete the deployment to its remaining customers.
“The Elster smart metering system has proven to be a very flexible network on which to build our smart grid,” said Craig Fleming, CEO, Enersource. “We are collecting more than 60,000 points of hourly interval data nightly using wireless IP communications with great reliability including our most difficult to access general service and industrial sites.”
“Elster has provided excellent support and has delivered a superior product,” said Tom Wasik, senior program manager for Enersource. “We are very pleased with our relationship with Elster and are excited about moving forward with other smart grid initiatives such as demand response and active monitoring of our distribution grid that will leverage our investment in the EnergyAxis System.”
Today, Enersource uses the Elster EnergyAxis System to collect interval usage data daily across its entire smart meter population. The province of Ontario has established targets for the installation of smart meters for all electricity consumers by the end of 2010. The program empowers consumer-driven energy conservation by providing consumers with the neccesary information to shift consumption patterns to off peaks times and reduce overall energy consumption.
“Elster is excited that Enersource has chosen to continue this important relationship,” said Jack Robertson, vice president and general manager for Elster Metering, Canada. “The Enersource program is another proof point of the value of Elster’s smart metering solutions and how they can improve operational efficiencies of utilities while providing meaningful conservation capabilities to consumers.”
